Find out about Dr Oetker's latest product, Bake in the Box loaf cakes!  And why not enter the Dr Oetker Baking Bundle Giveaway, valued over £50, where you could win some of their Bake in the Box loaf cakes as well as loads of other amazing baking products! (GIVEAWAY NOW CLOSED)

How to make an easy loaf cake

As much as I love to bake, with all of the creaming, sieving and folding that comes with making a cake, there are those occassions, like most people, where I want to enjoy the pleasure of eating a cake but simply don't have the time to bake!

So when the lovely people at Dr Oetker contacted me asking if I'd like to try their new Bake in the Box loaf cakes, I jumped at the chance.  I was fascinated to know what they were like, if they'd actually be quicker and easier than making a cake from scratch, and of course if they tasted as yummy!

So, in order to give the Bake in the Box loaf cakes a realistic trial I handed my blue floral apron to Mr E and challenged him with rustling up one of the cakes for our afternoon teatime treat!  You see, Mr E (hubby!) is a self confessed non-baker, though I was pretty impressed with the Cottage Loaf he made a week or two ago!

If you'd like to find out how well he did making his first cake, do watch the video below.  I'm sure you'll be giving them a try when you see how easy they are to make!

You could easily describe Dr Oetker's Bake in the Box loaf cakes as the half way house of cake baking!  They're absolutely perfect for when you're in need of a loaf cake, but are short of time.  There's no tin to prepare, no creaming, no chopping, no sieving and no folding involved.  And yet you still have the pleasure of watching a cake batter rise into a thing of beauty through the glass oven door, with all of the delicious baking aromas filling your home.

Definitely a win-win!

As I'm sure you noticed in the video, there are three Dr Oetker Bake in the Box loaf cakes in the range to choose from, available from Tesco supermarkets: Lemon & Poppy Seed, Banana & Choc Chip, and Double Chocolate.  So far we've tried the Lemon & Poppy Seed, and Banana & Choc Chip and we've certainly been impressed.  I have no doubts that the Double Chocolate Bake in the Box will be just as good.

Lemon & Poppy Seedi Loaf Cake

Here's what we loved about Dr Oetker's Bake in the Box loaf cakes:
  • They're really tasty, and smelt amazing when they were removed from the oven;
  • The instructions are super clear on the underside of the box (and they're repeated on the sachet too, that's pretty useful if you're as absent minded as me!);
  • There's no loaf tin to find, grease and line - it's all provided as part of the product;
  • The batter is super easy to make - you only need to mix in some milk;
  • Because they're super easy, they're super quick too.  Your cake batter will be in the oven baking within a minute or two of opening the sachet;
  • The loaf cakes bake really well producing a Madeira style cake with the characteristic crack to the top of the cake;
  • Currently there are three flavours available which would appeal to most people;
  • They're perfect to have in the cupboard ready for those unexpected visitors (you're secret will be safe with us if you choose to hide the packaging from your guests 😏);
  • They're great both decorated and undecorated, or why not add a lemon drizzle to the lemon & poppy seed loaf cake;
  • The card boxes can be recycled.

It's all really great stuff!

Dr Oetker very kindly provided us with three Bake in the Box loaf cakes for us to try in our own kitchen, and if you too would like to try them why not keep reading and enter our giveaway! Though if you're unsuccessful they can be purchased from Tesco supermarkets.

    8. Congratulations on your first brand giveaway! I am entering. What a clever idea to make a cake in a box, I didn't know you could buy things like that. You can tell I am not much of a baker, a bit like Mr E:) though he did very well with the cake.

    17. This is such an amazing baking mix! Unlike other mixes, you only have to add milk! Also no greasing the baking tin! The three flavors are also classics!! I wish, I stayed in UK, would have loved to try one of there products!

    18. Oh I love the Mr E video - the perfect way of showing off these bake in a box cakes, and what a fab idea...I think maybe I should show this to Mr G, who is sadly not blessed in the art of cake making, perhaps I would then get a birthday cake this year (Mr G and I have been together 15 years and he has never once made me a birthday cake, despite an inordinate amount of hint dropping...though to be fair he is very good at buying me presents and taking me out to dinner so I really shouldn't complain!)
